Small businesses are vital to the United States’ economy. In fact, prior to the pandemic, small businesses are said to have employed half of U.S. workers, and are important sources of wealth building, particularly for minority communities.1

Recent statistics shows us that there are 30.7 million small businesses in the United States alone.
99.9% of minority-owned businesses are small businesses in the United States.
1.1 million businesses in U.S are minority-owned.
1.1 million are majority owned by women.
2.52 million businesses in the U.S are majority owned by veterans.
900+ were certified LGBT Business Enterprises.
California, Texas, New York and Florida are home to almost half of all minority residents as well the most minority-owned businesses.
Our current reality:
National data shows us that active small business owners fell by 22% between February and April 2020. However, The truth is that not everyone was affected equally by this decline:
Black businesses fell by 41%
Latinx businesses decreased by 32%
Asian businesses owners dropped by 26%
White businesses owners fell by 17%
Our communities began to engage in the discussion. According to popular search engines, the term “minority owned businesses near me,” reached all time high in 2020.
Values represent search interest relative to the highest point on the chart for specific time/region. (100 = peak popularity, 50 = 1/2 as popular, 0 = not enough data)
To understand this narrative, sup conducted it’s own independent and anonymous analysis of members of our communities in respect to their conscious shopping habits.

Our results told a similar story:
72%
of respondents try to make a conscious effort to shop “small and minority-owned” because

they want to support their communities
they believe in better customer service or quality
they appreciate unique access to goods relating to one’s own identity and community
Respondents lacking this experience stated that they are “not aware of any minority owned businesses," that “accessibility and range of products are too limited,” or that they are “unsure of where to find them (in-person or online)."
